Aquamarine – Birthstone Of March

AquamarineWater is the ruling element for this zodiac sign and this gemstone is like crystal water.

Aquamarine is a variety of beryl (like emerald and morganite), however, instead of having a vivid green colour from chromium like an emerald, aquamarine gets its gentle blue tone from trace amounts of iron. Whereas most emeralds are quite hazy, aquamarine is beautifully clear and transparent like a glass of pure spring water. You will find these stones in different shades from light blue to dark blue and blue green.

The best and most valuable aquamarines are a saturated blue and transparent. Some gems will have long hollow rods typical of beryl stone inclusions. Rarely these inclusions can cause a chatoyancy creating a cat’s eye or star effect. These stones will usually be cut as cabochon and carry a premium price.

Beryls are 7.5-8 on the Mohs hardness scale. Aquamarine’s clarity, moreover, makes it more durable than its sister stone emerald lending itself more easily to use in all kinds of jewelry. It is also one of the few stones that look good in both yellow and white metals. At the Grammy awards, Maria Menounos, the host of Extra, wore Jamie Wolf’s yellow gold circular bead-set earrings with aquamarine.

GrammyLegend has it that these stones were prized among mermaids and that carrying one across the ocean would protect sailors from danger and sea sickness. According to Birks, the stone is believed to ensure continual happiness and constancy in love…symbolizing health, hope and youth.
