Traditionally, a birthstone is associated with each month of the year. However, not all of them are created equal. April’s designated birthstone is the diamond, the most coveted out of all the gemstones. There is also an exception to the gemstone rule, the pearl is what someone born in June might receive.
The origins of birthstones trace back to 1912 to the breastplate of Aaron, a ceremonial religious garment set with twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel, and corresponding with the twelve months of the year and the twelve zodiac signs. There are many myths surrounding the birthstones’ healing powers and therapeutic qualities. Each stone’s powers are heightened if worn in their month. For the full effect, it was believed that you need to have all twelve birthstones and alternate them monthly!
For January, the garnet is what you need. It is said to give the wearer victory, chastity, truth and fidelity. It would also make an ideal present for a friend who is not born in January because it signifies eternal friendship and trust.
Another of the more precious birthstones is found in May – the emerald. A favorite of Queen Cleopatra of Egypt, it brings about hope, success and above all, fertility. For that reason, emerald jewelry is a great gift idea for a woman who is expecting. The most prized emerald hues are vivid green and bluish green, neither too dark nor too light.
Sapphire, September’s birthstone has been popular since the Middle Ages and, according to folklore, will protect your loved ones from envy and harm. It was thought that the gem attracted heavenly blessings. Sapphires that have a medium to medium dark blue or slightly violet tinged blue are the most prized.
