Diamond in the Rough

SearchWith more than $22,000 in gemstones and prizes at stake and the chance to make the difference in a child’s life, hundreds of people gathered outside a jewelry shop in Billings, Montana hoping to snare one of the coveted diamonds.

The mad dash for diamonds was part of a Mother’s Day celebration put on by the West End community. It was set up so that every participant had exactly one minute to sift through two tons of sand, where the prizes were buried. Participants included mothers and children alike – some hoping to win Mom something special. Jody Coble was the first in line, approaching with a sense of ease and calm. “I’m hoping to get something good for my mom,” she says. Her 60 seconds of searching turned up a number of clear and colored stones, but she was limited to choosing one to bring home. She selected a 1.32 carat ruby worth about $500. In return for her gift, she donated the same amount to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Some of the buried stones correlated to prizes, including a 0.75 carat diamond valued at $3,000, a $2,500 diamond pendant and a $1,500 pink tourmaline pendant. So not only would the digger get to take home the gemstone, but also a bigger prize.
