Egyptian male toe rings fashion or medicine
Archeologists have acquired evidence of males in ancient Egypt who wore copper alloy toe rings more than 3,300 years ago. It is a mystery as to if the rings were merely fashion or had magical healing properties. Copper has a high conductivity rate and is known to move charged particles and electrons, since our body has an electrical circuitry it’s no doubt why Egyptians could have used a copper ring to speed up the healing process. It also allows heat to pass through so wearing it on the body could promote this as well.
Ancient Egyptians are known for their mysterious healing and magical capabilities. When members of the Amarna Project reported a discovery of two Egyptian skeletons, each wearing a toe ring made of copper alloy, they were shocked to discover it as this was the first of its kind to find. The study is published in the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology. Archaeologists believe the toe rings were worn while the individuals were still alive, but the purpose of the ring is a hot debate! Its possible that the toe rings were simply used as body adornments but the condition of the skeleton points to other conclusions. One skeleton suffered a fractured foot and broken left femur which made some researchers think that the toe ring on the damaged left foot may have been worn to heal the injuries.
“The act of binding or encircling was a powerful magical device in ancient Egypt, and a metal ring, which can be looped around something, lends itself well to this kind of action,” Anna Stevens, assistant director of Amarna Project, said to LiveScience.com.
While the other skeleton supports the claim that the toe rings were merely for fashion because this skeleton had no visible injuries. Although Stevens noted that this individual skeleton had not yet been studied in depth by bio-archaeologists.
The Amarma Project team unearthed the skeletons from a cemetery south of the ancient city of Akhetaten, which was a short lived Egyptian capital built by the father of the famous Tutankhamun.
