“Engagement” is a large sculpture created by one of the greatest conceptual artists of our time, Dennis Oppenheim. This magnificent sculpture is located at Sunset Beach in Downtown Vancouver. It is comprised of two steel rings standing at approximately thirty feet tall and tilted away from each other. Both are topped with glass gems in the place diamonds that are shaped as houses.
“Engagement” represents the balance in marriage between two different people with different interests and backgrounds. The idea behind shaping the diamond as a house was to symbolize the bond between engaged couples. However, Oppenheim leaves interpretation of his pieces up to the spectator. As with conceptual art, the meaning of each piece is in the eye of the beholder.
