Gemstones Uncovered: Zircon
Zircon is named after the element it contains, Zirconium. Zirconium is a shiny white-gray metal that looks like titanium. Its name comes from the Persian word Zargun meaning gold-like. It is not a well-known stone and is often confused with a similarly named stone Cubic Zirconia. However, these two stones are completely different. Zircon has a very different chemical composition and is a natural mineral.
Zircon is relatively hard as it is rated between a 6.5 and 7.5 on Mohs Scale, a diamond is of course the hardest at a 10 on the scale. It has been treated so that it is available in a variety of colours including orange, green, white, yellow, and most popularly blue. It has also been found naturally rose-coloured in Tanzania and orange-coloured in Cambodia.
