Let’s first talk about the reasons to buy gold. Right now, it is seen as an attractive, safe investment. Among many physical qualities, gold also holds an important intangible quality – timelessness. For centuries, gold has been prized from the Egyptians to the Aztecs to the Mongols. Even to today, it has held its’ value quite well. Although no longer used as a form of coin currency, it has quadrupled in value in only less than a decade, now trading at around $1750 CAD per ounce.
In pre-modern eras, wearing gold was seen as a symbol of great power. That image has transcended over time. Although we do not necessarily associate anyone wearing gold as one who is greatly powerful, it still conveys to others that the person wearing it has taste and appreciates classic, simple things.
24 karat pure gold is quite malleable, and therefore more prone to nicks, scratches, and dents through everyday wear in jewelry. Alloys are very popular, reinforcing the gold with more durable metals. The most popular ratios are 22 karat and 18 karat. It is especially important for rings to be as strong as possible, since they are more likely to come in contact with objects as opposed to other articles of jewelry such as necklaces or earrings.
White gold is an alloy of gold and at least one white metal. The most common additional white metals used are nickel, manganese, and palladium. Usually these only produce an off white color, so a common practice is to dip the jewelry in rhodium plating, which brings it to a brilliant white. However, this surface plating has to be maintained every so often to keep its white lustre.
