Jewelry Trend Spotted: Rutilated Quartz
Rutilated quartz is a type of quartz that has rutile enclosures in the stone. Rutile is a mineral that has a very high refractive index, meaning, that when it is found as an inclusion in other stones it almost always appears in long, thin shoots of color. Rutilus is in fact the Latin word for red; the mineral gained this name because some specimens can be a lovely deep red hue. However, rutile can also appear as brown or gray tones. Some of the most coveted rutilated quartz are the ones with gold rutile, which gives the appearance of having fine gold thread running through.
Lately, rutilated quartz has been making a big appearance on high fashion runways, in part due to its versatility in being incorporated into many styles of jewelry. This summer, it’s all about having gold and pastels, and bold statement jewelry with emphasis on ornate embroidery.
Scarlett Johansson accessorized her evening look with rectangular drop rutile quartz earrings, but fashion jewelry is not just for women! Brad Pitt proves this by wearing a rutilated quartz pendant set in platinum and gold.
At Secret Sapphire, we carry Margo Morrison’s jewelry line which focuses on the raw look of gemstones – almost all of her jewelry has semi-precious and precious gemstones threaded with silk to create draping necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. We also have on display a one-off rutilated quartz necklace set in yellow gold. Visit us at our Yaletown location to see more!
