One Of A Kind Mikimoto Necklace
The 40th edition of the Baselworld 2012 Fair ended on March 15th after a successful week. Every year, the Baselworld Fair showcases luxury product lines for the watches and jewelry industry. Renowned jewelry houses from around the world come to represent their brands, they also come to admire new additions from other brands.
Mikimoto jewelers had outdone themselves this year, introducing jade into their collection for the first time, as well as adding more akoya pearl designs. They also unveiled a few one-of-a-kind pieces fit for royalty, ranging anywhere from $175,000 to $450,000.
The showstopper of the Mikimoto display was a princess-inspired piece of 1,490 akoya pearls ranging from 6.5 to 9.5 mm, threaded on about 44 yards of silk. With their unparalleled eye for quality, it took Mikimoto six months to collect all of the pearls for this necklace and another six months to create it. The piece features eight choker length numbers and several long strands meant to drape across from one shoulder to the waist and hip. The designers aimed to create “a look that emulated refined beauty through graceful draping and dazzling lustre from every angle.”
