Sotheby’s Auction Features Legendary Jewels from Brooke Astor
Sotheby’s recent auction featured jewellery from the collection of philanthropist and legendary New York society figure, Brooke Astor. Jewels from the estate garnered over $18 million and showcased stunning emerald and diamonds from Mrs. Astor’s personal collection.
One of the biggest sales of the auction was Astor’s 22.84 carat platinum, emerald and diamond engagement ring designed by Van Cleef & Arpels. The stunning piece which dates back to the 1930s brought in $1.2 million. Other pieces which were highlighted are a Bulgari emerald and diamond necklace which fetched $686,500 and a Van Cleef & Arpels diamond and platinum ring sold for $614,000.
The auction’s proceeds will benefit several of Mrs. Astor’s chosen charity organizations, including the New York Public Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City Schools, and the Animal Medical Centre of New York.
